Google Play All Access Review

I saw an offer to try Google Play All Access for free for 30 days.  I absolutely love music.  I listen to it all day long -- in the shower, at work, during my commute, while cleaning my apartment...  I've tried other music players and none fit all of my needs.  I'm pretty picky.  I need to...

  • be able to listen to music that I don't own
  • be able to listen on various devices (laptops, friends' laptops, my cell phone, ...)
  • be able to listen when I have no internet connection
  • not have commercials
  • be able to make my own playlists
  • have the choice of listening to many artists, genres, and new releases
  • have high sound quality
  • be able to blacklist songs that I do not like (but the ability to easily reverse that choice too!)
  • be able to discover new music easily
  • be able to have playlists made for me by the service
However, I also don't want to pay too much for these features.  I know... that's ALOT to ask.  I have tried the services listed below.  Each has its pluses and minuses, but none were able to fit my list of needs.
  • +Pandora...
    • is great because...
      • you can listen to music on any device
      • it magically makes playlists based on almost any song, artist, or genre
      • has high sound quality
      • it allows you to blacklist songs you don't like
      • and you don't have to own the music you're listening to.
    • but...
      • there are commercials (note: you can pay for a subscription to get rid of commercials)
      • they mainly have popular songs, so playlists soon start repeating themselves if you listen to the playlist a lot
      • you have to be connected to the internet to use the service.
      • you can't make your own playlists
    • This was the service I used before Google Play All Access came out.  It worked okay for my needs.  I would use it at work or with friends.  At work it was very distracting when a commercial would come on between every few classical songs though.  Also, I still had to use a different method for listening to music when I did not have internet connection or when there were specific songs I wanted to listen to.
  • +Spotify...
    • Is great because...
      • it allows you to both create your own playlists and have Spotify make a playlist for you based off of a song or artist
      • you don't have to own the music that you listen to
    • but...
      • you can only listen on your desktop (unless you pay for the subsciption that costs $9.99/month)
      • you will have commercials (unless you pay for the subscription that costs $4.99/month or the subscription that costs $9.99/month)
      • you always need to be connected to the internet.
    • This service would be suitable if my only use case was listening to music at work.  But most of the time, I do not have internet service or I am not by a computer.  I am not okay with paying extra to access Spotify on devices besides a computer.  There are other services (like Pandora) that I can use to listen to playlists on ANY device for free.  For times when I want to make my own playlist or listen to a specific song, I can just use YouTube for free.  However, I love free things, and there is a free 30 day trial for the most expensive subscription right now!  It would allow you to listen on any device without commercials.  After that though, I'd need to move to another product.
  • iTunes...
    • is great because...
      • it can magically create playlists (consisting of songs you own) for you based on a song in your library (there are some catches here... you must own the song and this does not always work if there are not enough matches for the song or iTunes does not recognize the song)
      • you do not need internet connection to listen to it
      • there are no commercials while listening
      • the music is great quality
      • you can make your own playlists (with songs you own)
      • you can blacklist any songs you do not want to listen to
    • but...
      • iTunes requires you buy the music you listen to (currently $1.29 per song!)
      • the songs you purchase can only be accessed by a limited number of devices
      • you cannot listen to songs that you do not own!
    • This service definitely does not fit my needs, mainly because I do not want to buy every song I listen to.  Another downside is that I cannot access my library easily from a friend's computer.
In comparison, Google Music All Access is perfect for me.  I'm able to listen to a huge selection of songs that I do not own, and they are all great quality.  I can make playlists containing songs I own AND songs that I do not own easily.

You can access your Google Play All Access account from any device.  At your friend's place and want to listen from their laptop?  No problem!  Commuting to work and only have your cell phone?  No problem?  Lounging on your couch with just your tablet?  No problem!

Best of all, you do not need to be connected to the internet to listen to songs.  You can "pin" songs using the Google Play application on your mobile device.  When you "pin" a song or playlist, it stores the song or playlist on your device.  Hurray!

Tired of your usual songs and playlists?  Google Play All Access has an EXCELLENT system for creating playlists based on a song you pick.  Even if I always make a playlist from the same song, the playlist is never the same.  But I always love the songs that they choose.  The playlist is a combination of old songs, new songs, unknown artists, well-known artists, etc.  But every song has a similar feeling to it as the song from which I made the playlist.  Best of all, building a playlist ALWAYS works.  It has never choked on making a playlist for me like I've experienced with the iTunes Genius feature.

Other benefits are that there are no commercials!!  The user interface is awesome.  In addition, Google Play All Access integrates with Google+.

So even though I pay $7.99 per month for a subscription (I signed up early enough for a special rate), I no longer buy songs, can spend less on data each month because I can save music on my phone to listen to on my commute, and I save time when I don't have constant commercial interruptions while listening to background music at work!
